Circles is using AI to turn telecom support from a cost centre into a faster, more personalised growth engine

Circles, a Singapore startup that builds software for digital telecom operators, has launched an AI concierge as part of its partnership with OpenAI. The release marks a new step in the company’s effort to modernise how telecom providers serve and retain customers. The move reflects a wider shift in the telecom sector. Many operators still rely on older support systems that can be slow, fragmented and costly to run. AI is now being tested as a way to improve service while creating new revenue opportunities.

Circles said the concierge is built on OpenAI’s API platform and sits within what it calls an AI-native telecom stack. In practical terms, the system is designed to handle customer support, account changes and personalised offers through automated interactions.

One part of the platform is called CareX. According to the company, it can deal with billing issues, service requests and network-related problems. Circles said CareX currently resolves 85% of customer queries globally without human intervention and reaches a 95% resolution rate on end-to-end tasks. That matters because customer support remains one of the larger operating costs for telecom providers. Faster automated handling could lower pressure on service teams while reducing wait times for users.

The second part of the platform is Xplore IQ, which focuses on revenue growth. The tool is designed to predict what a customer may need, recommend a suitable plan or offer and complete upgrades or downgrades automatically. Circles said the early rollout has led to a 22% rise in average revenue per user for Circles.Life Singapore. It also said personalised offers helped reduce customer churn by 9%.

How ChinaMarket uses digital tools to make cross-border sourcing faster and more accessible for smaller businesses

The 5th RCEP (Shandong) Import Commodities Expo opened this week at the Linyi International Expo Center, bringing together more than 5,300 buyers and over 400 exhibitors from 48 countries. Alongside the scale of the event, a quieter shift was visible in how trade itself is being organised.

ChinaMarket, the official platform of Linyi Mall, used the expo to show how sourcing is moving from manual coordination to software-led systems. On the first day, it hosted procurement matchmaking sessions and signed agreements with buyer groups from Argentina, South Korea and Ghana. But the focus was less on the deals themselves and more on the mechanism behind them.

The platform operates as a structured network of verified manufacturers, grouped by industrial clusters. Instead of buyers searching supplier by supplier, the system uses data and AI tools to match demand with production capacity. At the expo, this process was made visible through real-time data screens and guided sourcing sessions, where procurement teams connected directly with factories across categories such as building materials, textiles and electronics.

"Sourcing suppliers separately was time-consuming and inefficient. ChinaMarket accurately matches our needs and recommends reliable factories, saving us considerable effort," commented an Argentine buyer.

The underlying problem being addressed is not new. Cross-border sourcing is often slow, fragmented and dependent on intermediaries. What is changing is how that process is being compressed. By combining supplier verification, demand matching and communication into a single system, platforms like ChinaMarket aim to shorten sourcing cycles. They also reduce uncertainty in procurement decisions.  

Financing is another layer where the model is evolving. Even when suppliers and buyers are matched efficiently, access to capital can still slow transactions down. Small and medium-sized firms often face constraints around payment terms and access to credit in international trade.

ChinaMarket’s “data + order financing” model links transaction data with financial services, allowing funding decisions to be tied more directly to verified orders rather than external collateral. In practice, this shifts part of the risk assessment from institutions to platform-level data.

The company is also extending this structure into agricultural supply chains. At the expo, it signed an agreement with a local government in Yinan County to build a digitally managed agricultural belt. The model combines sourcing at origin with platform distribution, with an emphasis on traceability for buyers across RCEP markets. This reflects a broader attempt to standardise supply visibility in sectors that are typically less digitised.

Geographically, the platform has been expanding into Southeast Asia. It has launched a digital marketplace in Malaysia and established operations in Indonesia, including support for government-linked procurement projects. These moves suggest a focus on embedding the platform within regional trade flows rather than operating as a standalone marketplace.

"We aim to be a 'super connector' between Chinese industrial belts and global markets", said Quan Chuanxiao, Chairman of Depth Digital Technology Group and ChinaMarket. "By digitizing the cross-border trade process, we solve trust and efficiency issues, making it simpler, faster, and more reliable for overseas buyers to source from China".

What emerges from the expo is less about a single platform and more about a shift in infrastructure. Trade is gradually moving toward systems where discovery, verification, negotiation and financing are handled within integrated digital layers. The question is not whether sourcing can be digitised, but how reliably these systems can scale across industries where trust and execution still depend on physical outcomes.

This result feels less like using a regular phone and more like interacting with something responsive.  

So what makes HONOR’s Robot Phone different from the smartphones we already use? Here’s a closer look at its camera system, AI features and design, and whether it is truly something new or simply smart marketing.

What does the HONOR Robot Phone do?

At its core, the Robot Phone still works like a regular smartphone. What makes it different is the camera system. It has a 200MP camera that sits on a motorized arm with a three-axis gimbal, which extends when in use and folds back into the phone when not needed. The compact motor gives the camera physical movement, while motion control allows it to sense, track and follow a person or object in real time. That means it can keep a subject in frame without constant manual adjustment.  

The camera also adds a more playful side to the experience. It can respond with simple gestures, such as nodding or shaking its head, and it can even move in sync with music.

This setup could be particularly useful for content creators. As CNET tech journalist and YouTuber Andrew Lanxon pointed out, it removes the need to carry a separate gimbal. Since the robotic camera module can easily fold into the body of the phone, it is easier to carry around and more convenient for filming or taking photos on the go.  

The Robot Phone also has the practical advantage of a smartphone display. It gives users a bigger screen than a standalone camera for framing, monitoring and reviewing footage. Since it runs on Android, the process of recording, editing and sharing content is also more direct.  

The Robot Phone’s Design: How the moving camera fits inside

The most impressive part of the HONOR Robot Phone design is how it fits a moving camera system into the body of a smartphone without needing external attachments.  

To make this possible, HONOR uses a custom micro motor that is 70% smaller than mainstream competitors. The company also says it is the industry’s smallest four-degrees-of-freedom (4DoF) gimbal system. To support the stable movement of the camera module, the internal structure uses high-strength materials such as steel and titanium alloy. These materials help the mechanism stay durable as it shifts and repositions over time.

Battery life is another obvious question. HONOR has not revealed the battery capacity of the Robot Phone itself, but it did showcase its Silicon-Carbon Blade Battery technology at MWC 2026. The company says this battery is designed to increase energy density while keeping devices slim, and that it could support capacities of 7,000 mAh and beyond in future foldable devices.  

That is not specific to the Robot Phone, but it does hint at the kind of battery improvements that may be needed for smartphones with moving parts and more advanced camera systems.

The AI features of the Robot Phone

The AI features in Honor’s Robot Phone are focused on how the device sees and responds to its surroundings in real time. At the most basic level, the phone can track what is happening in a scene and adjust itself without constant user input.

On the functional side, the system keeps subjects framed and in focus automatically. Its AI Object Tracking ensures subjects stay centred, while AI SpinShot enables controlled 90° and 180° rotations for smoother transitions, even when the phone is used one-handed. It can also detect motion and recognize sound, which lets it respond to activity as it happens instead of reacting frame by frame.

The AI becomes more noticeable in the way the device behaves. When activated, the camera module unfolds and the screen displays a pair of animated eyes that track the user’s face and gaze. Honor calls this “embodied AI”, meaning the assistant expresses itself through movement rather than only voice or text. The camera module can adjust its angle during video calls, which makes it feel a little more physically present.

According to Thomas Bai, AI product expert at Honor, the goal is to move beyond passive assistance. By combining sensing, movement and real-time processing, the device is designed to interact with its environment in a more continuous way. In practice, that could mean interpreting its surroundings and responding as situations change, such as when someone is moving through an unfamiliar space.

The gaps beneath the hype

The Robot Phone has sparked curiosity, but there is still a lot we do not know. For one thing, it is still a prototype, with a release expected later this year. Early signs also suggest it may be expensive, partly because of rising memory chip costs. Some of its more playful features also feel uncertain. In demos, the phone can move along to music, but with only a handful of pre-set tracks, it is hard to tell whether that feature will be genuinely useful or remain more of a showcase moment.

Then there are the practical questions. A motorized camera system could make the phone heavier and more top-heavy, which may affect comfort during daily use. Running a motor alongside continuous AI tracking will also likely put pressure on battery life. These are not dealbreakers, but they are trade-offs that will matter outside of a demo.

Privacy is another concern that is hard to overlook. Some of the AI features rely on cloud processing, which means certain data is sent to external servers instead of being processed fully on the device. That is common in many AI systems today, but it feels more significant here because the phone is built to actively track movement and reposition its camera in real time. For some people, that level of autonomy may feel intrusive rather than helpful. It also raises bigger questions about what sensors are built into the device and how much data they collect during everyday use.  

Final verdict: Is the HONOR Robot Phone worth paying attention to?

So, is the HONOR Robot Phone a real step forward, or just a clever idea packaged well?

The answer depends on who it is for.  

For content creators, the appeal is obvious. Early indications suggest it could make video capture easier by reducing the need for extra gear. Honor’s collaboration with cinema camera company ARRI also suggests a serious push toward more cinematic smartphone footage.

For everyone else, the value is less clear. Outside of content creation, it is still hard to see how these features would translate into everyday use in a meaningful way.

For now, the Robot Phone sits somewhere between promise and experiment. Whether it turns into a genuinely useful new kind of smartphone or fades away as a novelty will only become clear once it moves beyond controlled demos and into real life.

Google Arts & Culture extends the partnership beyond the ceremony. Select Academy Museum exhibitions and materials from the Academy’s 52-million-item collection will be made digitally accessible worldwide, bringing film history and education onto the same platform.

Japan-based TIER IV has invested in Turing Drive, a Taiwan startup that builds autonomous driving systems designed for controlled, everyday environments such as factories, ports, airports and industrial campuses. The investment establishes a capital and business alliance between the two companies, with a shared focus on developing autonomous driving technology and expanding operations across Asia.

Rather than targeting open roads and city traffic, Turing Drive’s work centres on places where vehicles follow fixed routes and move at low speeds. These include logistics hubs, manufacturing facilities and commercial sites where automation is already part of daily operations. According to the release, Turing Drive has deployments across Taiwan, Japan and other regions and works closely with vehicle manufacturers to integrate autonomous systems into special-purpose vehicles.

The investment also connects Turing Drive more closely with Autoware, an open-source autonomous driving software ecosystem supported by TIER IV. Turing Drive joined the Autoware Foundation in September 2024 and develops its systems using this shared software framework. TIER IV’s own Pilot.Auto platform, which is built around Autoware, is used across applications such as factory transport, public transit, freight movement and autonomous mobility services.

Through the alliance, TIER IV plans to work with Turing Drive to further develop autonomous driving systems for these controlled environments, while strengthening its presence in Taiwan and the broader Asia-Pacific region. The collaboration brings together software development and on-the-ground deployment experience within markets where autonomous driving is already being tested in real operational settings.
